Description
Galantamine, a tertiary alkaloid, is a selective, competitive, and reversible acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. In addition, galantamine increases the endogenous action of acetylcholine on nicotinic receptors, most likely by binding to an allosteric site of the receptor. This results in increased activity in the cholinergic system associated with improved cognitive function that can be achieved in patients with Alzheimer’s dementia.
